全球气候变暖对全世界的人们来说是迫在眉睫的威胁。首先，全球气候变暖会导致海平面的上升。由于气候变暖，中国大多数沿海地区都将随着海平面的上升逐渐消失，严重危害了国家的社会和经济发展。中国漫长的海岸线遍布着中国70%的大城市，人口数量占到全国总人口的一半以上，控制着国家经济的将近60%。这些城市的社会、经济和文化发展程度相对先进，如果海平面继续保持上升的话，那么对于中国的内陆城市来说将会承受巨大的损失。其次，全球气候变暖加大了出现极端天气的可能性并加重其强烈程度，例如飓风、雪灾。在最近30年里，飓风和台风持续的时间越来越长，强度也越来越大。这是与全球气候变暖所带来的海平面温度上升紧密联系的。
